Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker posted a video on X stating that his administration is making things more affordable in Illinois by lowering homeowners’ insurance costs and fixing roads and bridges. According to the post, he argued that putting more money in people’s pockets is key to addressing affordability. The message has drawn strong attention online, with many users reacting by questioning the claim and citing higher taxes, fees, and out-of-pocket costs for residents.
The post was shared on X by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker through the account @GovPritzker. It features a video clip excerpted from an interview on The Takeaway with Alex, a podcast and video series produced by NBC Chicago and hosted by Alex Maragos.
In the clip, in response to a question about issues that resonate beyond affordability broadly, he states: “I think you know my agenda, I have gotten through and done in Illinois; we have more to do, but I raised minimum wage. It was $8.25 when I ran for office. I said I was gonna raise it to $15 an hour, and I did. And I said I was going to make life more affordable, and indeed we made homeowners insurance more affordable; we made auto insurance more affordable. We said we’re gonna fix the roads and bridges and the airports and water ports across the state, and what do you know we have. So there’s much more to do, but I think it’s about addressing things that really affect your daily life.”
He added, “If you want to make things more affordable? Put a little more money in people’s pockets. Here in Illinois, we’re doing just that by lowering the cost of homeowners insurance and fixing our roads and bridges.”
According to the post, the statements reflect administration efforts on affordability. The video and caption do not specify the exact legislation, timelines, or measurable results, and no independent verification of the outcomes described is included in the shared material.
Online Debate Over Illinois Affordability Claims
Several users dismissed the message as inaccurate. One wrote, “What lies. The data shows skyrocketing taxes, increasing crime, increasing illegal aliens, welfare fraud, and all large businesses fleeing the state.” Another stated simply, “Lmfao lies big fat lies.”
Others focused on personal or household costs. A commenter noted, “Hmm, it cost us Illinoisans over $1400 more OUT of pocket since you took office.”
Additional replies criticized specific policies. One said, “This guy raised dozens of taxes and fees. This month he is raising highway tolls.”
Another asked, “Tell us you stole from the Road Fund to try and hide your ‘Pet Projects’ to mask the Cost Overruns? Why have you not lowered the Gas Tax? Our neighboring States are paying $0.60-70 cents Less per Gallon!”
Some responses addressed priorities and beneficiaries. One stated, “You’re doing NO SUCH thing for citizens of Illinois. Illegal aliens… yes. But not Illinois citizens.”
Another described the governor as “an economic moron,” linking wage policies to inflation and to business departures from the state.
The clip has added to the ongoing online conversation about affordability policies in Illinois. Critics continue to focus on whether the governor’s initiatives have reduced costs for residents or coincided with higher taxes and fees.
