Almost immediately after the teaser trailer was released and began breaking records, Lightyear entered Twitter’s top global trends. What We Know From Lightyear’s Trailer
Disney’s synopsis of Lightyear reads,
The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear- the hero who inspired the toy- introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.”
What we do know about the premise of Lightyear falls in line with what the synopsis says. The film is placed inside the lore of Toy Story, but not in the actual world of the toys. Instead, Lightyear tells the story of the astronaut that inspired the Buzz Lightyear line of toys.
The trailer for Lightyear opened with the astronaut preparing for liftoff in his space shuttle. He then blasts off to Mars, leaving Star Command and Earth behind. As Buzz flies through space, he experiences a time distortion before arriving back on Earth. When he departs his ship, he notices that the world around him is astronomically advanced.
One more thing to note about the film is that Tim Allen will not be reprising his role as Buzz Lightyear. Instead, the hero of the film will be played by Chris Evans.
Lightyear is set to release in theaters on June 17, 2022.
