During a recent interview, the technical director at Ryu Ga Gotoku studio, Yutaka Ito, mentioned how he’d like to create a new Dragon Engine for the Like a Dragon series, previously known as Yakuza. With the fact that fans have positively received the latest engine, the studio thinks it’s time to take things to a new level, specifically regarding high-spec consoles. With the series launching almost a new game every year, it doesn’t seem like the franchise will stop any time soon.

Recently, Yutaka Ito spoke with Automaton Media and mentioned his desire to create a new Dragon Engine for the long-standing series.

The Like a Dragon series has evolved technologically with each title, but at the core of the series is the Dragon Engine that was developed for Yakuza 6. In this sense, personally, I’d like to try to make a new Dragon Engine specialized for high-spec consoles.

While the current game engine is fantastic and has been a blessing ever since Yakuza 6, we can all agree that it’s time for it to evolve for newer consoles. Fortunately, the studio’s technical director is in the same boat. Having a better engine for high-spec consoles would eventually eliminate the limitations that older platforms bring. Furthermore, it would push future hardware to bring even bigger and more immersive experiences, which is something the Like a Dragon series is known for.

One thing to keep in mind is that Yutaka Ito mentioned that this isn’t something the studio is actively pursuing.

This is just what I personally feel, so it has nothing to do with the studio’s actual plans.

While it isn’t official, many fans are already happy about the possibility and agree with RGG’s technical director.

Finally, Old-Gen should have been abandoned a long time ago, surprised about the new upgraded engine though, exciting news.

One thing that’s certain is that the engine has improved with each new entry. You can look at Yakuza 6 and then at Infinite Wealth and see how the studio has pushed its boundaries. Also, it seems that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will push the Dragon Engine even further, as we can see with the naval combat, ship boarding, and more things we’ve yet to discover. All in all, it’s nice to see the legendary series is still looking for ways to bring an even smoother experience to players with each new title.
