It’s National Dog Day, and of course, the wrongest time to get entangled on the vilified end of a dog scandal. Sadly, Lily Allen finds herself caught in those webs and PETA seems determined to keep her right there, “for the greater good,” following her dog confession. Days prior, the English singer-songwriter shared an account of her experience with a rescue dog named Mary on her Miss Me? podcast.
She revealed how she ended up returning the adopted puppy after it ate her kids’ passports among other mishaps it stirred around the house. Her honest exposé sparked media outrage, with many condemning her for “dumping her puppy” over something so petty.
PETA Comes at Lily Allen For ‘Tossing’ Her Dog
PETA led the backlash, dedicating a social media post on ethics to Lily Allen. Further fuelling the flames, the organization ruled her unfit to own anything but a toy dog, even offering to send her one.
As the media backlash continued, Lily Allen was forced to hit back, sharing a lengthy post to clarify the dog scandal. In her post, the star explained that eating her kids’ passport was the last straw in a long list of mishaps. Her family’s attempt to train the puppy yielded naught, prompting them to take the necessary steps to rehome her.
She also criticized the media for spotlighting the part of her “dumping the puppy,” which has since exposed her to “abhorrent messages including death threats.” Concluding, Lily Allen added a sarcastic note of thanks to PETA for “adding fuel to the fire.” PETA bit the bait, doubling down on their criticism with more scathing remarks, seemingly ignoring the sensitivity of “death threats.” They fired,
“YOU laughed when speaking about abandoning Mary and ruined this poor dog’s life. She thought she had a loving forever home before you tossed her out, calling her “that f******* dog” who “ruined my life.” Shame on you. You don’t deserve even the toy dog we sent you.”
In her defense, Lily Allen explained that laughing when opening up about a painful experience was relatively normal. She then condemned PETA’s insistence on crowning her the villain despite her clarifications, calling their post dangerous.
PETA Under Fire Following Unending Social Media Rant
Having said her bit, the singer took a breather from the scandal, avoiding further controversial comments. However, just when it seemed the dog scandal would blow over, PETA stirred the dust once again on National Dog Day. On Monday, August 26, the animal rights group hit Lily with another scathing post, still dwelling on the “laughing” saga which the star already clarified. The group wrote,
“As someone high profile with a platform, what you say matters. Laughing about this ‘f*******’ dog being sent back sends a dangerous message. Every move is traumatic to a homeless dog who then cannot accept this home is forever.”
Fans intervened this time, calling out PETA for dwelling on the same issues despite Lily’s decision to take the high road. They regarded the group’s action as unprofessional, and outright bullying regardless of the noble cause they aimed to uphold. One concerned X user wrote,
“What kind of animal charity are you? This is unprofessional. Stop this harassment! The dog has gone to a good home either way, one that can take care of her.”
Another fired,
“This is pure harassment. Stop it.”
Another wrote,
“This can’t really be PETA authorizing these tweets. urely they’ve been hacked. @Lilyallen should be suing the a** of them.”
A third wrote,
“This is horrendous posting.”
The sentiments quickly stirred in Lily’s favor as more netizens questioned PETA’s latest ranting spree. Fans, in turn, praised the English crooner for not caving in while commending her decision to find a better home for the dog. Hopefully, the heat of the scandal would blow over, and Lily and her family would have many chances to celebrate a less chaotic National Dog Day in the future, enjoying the love, companionship, and loyalty it truly stands for.
