Lionsgate has recently acquired the worldwide rights to Scrambled, an upcoming comedy by Leah McKendrick. The film, which marks McKendrick’s directorial debut, recently concluded filming and marks the continuation of Lionsgate’s collaboration with Megamix, the production studio behind the film.
Scrambled will star Leah McKendrick in the lead role as Nellie Robinson, a broke 34-year-old who’s down on her luck after a rough breakup and makes the choice to freeze her eggs, only for the procedure to send her into the mother of all existential crises. McKendrick has reportedly based the script for the film based on her own egg-extracting experience, which Deadline reports she underwent last year.
Along with Leah McKendrick, the ensemble cast of Scrambled is set to include Ego Nwodim (It’s A Party), Andrew Santino (This Is Us), Clancy Brown (John Wick: Chapter 4), Leah Cerón (ER), Adam Rodriguez (Ordinary Joe), Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale), June Diane Raphael (American Dad!), Noah Silver (The Borgias), Sterling Sulieman (Still Star-Crossed), Max Adler (Glee), Mimi Kennedy (Mom), Camille Mana (Seal Team), and Matt Pascua (Walker).
What We Know About Leah McKendrick and ‘Scrambled’
Though Scrambled will mark Leah McKendrick’s directorial debut, the Latina-American actress has a storied career of experience both starring in and producing noteworthy rom-coms, like 2017’s M.F.A., a vigilante thriller the New York Times reportedly called “the first horror movie to speak to the #MeToo era”. Additionally, McKendrick wrote the high-anticipated Grease prequel Summer Lovin’, which has yet to premiere, and 2013’s Destroy the Alpha Gammas.
Scrambled is set to be produced by Johnathan Levine, Gillian Borher, McAuley Cahill, and Jordan Backhus for Megamix, making the upcoming comedy a continuation of an agreement between Lionsgate and the production company. The pair have previously collaborated on the upcoming sequel to Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Grey and directed by Johnathan Levine, and Sailing, a “yacht rock musical comedy” starring Woody Harrelson. Production financing for Scrambled is provided by BondIt Media Capital, with Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, and Grady Craig.
