Lorne Michaels has been at the helm of Saturday Night Live for the show’s whole run. As the 50th anniversary of the NBC mainstay approaches, many are wondering what will happen to the show when the 79-year-old decides to retire from running the weekend sketch comedy phenomenon.
SNL’s Big Anniversary is in 2025
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Lorne Michaels explained to the outlet the plans he has to spend the next year, at minimum, continuing to head SNL.
“We’re doing the 50th-anniversary show in February of ’25, so I will definitely be there for that, and definitely be there until that,” he shared. “And sometime before that, we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do.”
Michaels Offered Up Someone Who Could Handle Helming the Show After He Retires
When ET‘s Nischelle Turner suggested beloved SNL alum Tina Fey could rise to the occasion, Michaels agreed and added,
“It could easily be Tina Fey, but you know, there are a lot of people who are there now who are also, you know…”
“Tina’s brilliant and great at everything. She’s a very important person in my life.”
