A Louisiana woman has New Orleans drivers questioning what came out of a Costco gas pump after claiming her mechanic drained what appeared to be water from her car less than a day after she filled up.
Ashley shared the bizarre experience on TikTok after claiming her car suddenly began acting strangely the morning after she filled her tank.
The woman, who described herself as a “creature of habit,” said she had been buying premium gas from the Costco on Dublin Street for the past two and a half years. She claimed she stopped at the same Costco on Wednesday and filled up her tank at her usual pump before driving home.
However, according to her, when she got into her car the following morning, she noticed something was wrong. “My car was pulling,” she recalled.
The woman said she drove directly to a repair shop, where a mechanic initially changed a sensor. When that failed to solve the problem, she said he began draining her car and made an unexpected discovery.
“Nothing but water is coming out my car,” she claimed. “The gas in my car is water.”
She included a short video she recorded while at the repair shop. In the footage, a mechanic can be seen holding a clear plastic bottle near the vehicle’s engine. As someone starts the car, a clear liquid shoots from a line into the bottle, quickly filling the container. The video itself does not establish what the liquid is, but the woman alleged that it was water being drained from her vehicle.
Netizens React to the Louisiana Costco Incident
The video left several viewers stunned. In the comments under the post, one person exclaimed, “OMGGGGGG that is pure water!” Another said, “This is terrifying. I can’t afford for something like this to happen to me…”
A third wrote, “That’s a huge lawsuit you have on your hands. Run don’t walk to get you a lawyer. That is just crazy!” A fourth advised her to “save that bottle, get it tested and sue,” while someone else suggested she “notify the La Agriculture Commissioner as well and file a complaint.”
Other viewers were rattled simply because they regularly use the same gas station. “The way my JAW DROPPED!!! I only get gas there too!!!” one commenter wrote. Another claimed, “Oh my gosh, the same thing happened to my car like two weeks ago after I got Costco gas but I did not put two and two together. same exact Costco location.”
Some Suggested It Could Have Been Accidental
Some people, however, cautioned against assuming Costco knowingly sold contaminated fuel. “Costco may not even know. It could just be who they buy the gas from…” one viewer pointed out.
Several commenters, who identified themselves as fuel haulers, suggested there are ways water could potentially enter a fuel supply accidentally. One said, “If yall have had heavy rain in the area, it’s a possibility that water could’ve gotten in their tanks.”
They went on to suggest that even if the tanks are normally kept locked, a missing gasket could potentially allow water inside. The commenter also floated another possibility involving the fuel delivery itself, claiming that water could be present in a trailer that had been sitting if it wasn’t properly drained before being loaded.
The woman said she returned to the Costco after learning what had allegedly happened and filed a claim over the incident. Ashley isn’t the only driver to recently question the fuel from this particular Costco.
Earlier in September, weeks before Ashley posted her video, another driver wrote on Reddit that their vehicle began misfiring after getting gas and that a mechanic found bad fuel with water in it. The driver specifically asked whether anyone else had experienced fuel issues after filling up at the Costco on Dublin Street.
That account doesn’t establish that Costco’s fuel caused either driver’s problems, but it shows Ashley isn’t the first person to recently raise questions about fuel from this location.
There is a way to get a more definitive answer. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry investigates complaints about water or other contaminants in motor fuel and can collect suspected fuel for laboratory testing. If contamination is confirmed, the department says the affected fuel can be “red tagged” to stop further sales. However, there is currently no publicly available test result confirming that the fuel Ashley purchased from Costco contained water.
