A Louisiana woman has gone viral after claiming a Planet Fitness manager demanded she pay nearly $500 without explaining what the charge was for. The dispute escalated when the woman alleged the manager later offered to sign her cancellation paperwork herself, prompting accusations of attempted signature forgery.
The story was shared by TikTok user @katehallwilson, who typically posts personal videos and daily life updates. Her account of the incident quickly gained attention, with the video surpassing two million views and eventually receiving a public response from Planet Fitness’ official TikTok account.
According to katehallwilson, the incident began when she scanned into her local Planet Fitness and was stopped by a manager she said she had never met before. The manager allegedly told her she had an outstanding balance of nearly $500.
The TikToker said she was confused because she believed she had already paid all of her membership fees. She claimed that when she repeatedly asked what the charge was for, the manager refused to explain and instead told her she could either pay or leave the gym.
She says she left the building and sat in her car before deciding to go back inside to continue the conversation. During the second encounter, she asked to cancel her membership. The manager then told her she would sign the cancellation paperwork on her behalf. Kate later accused the manager of attempting to forge her signature, calling the interaction one of the strangest customer service experiences she had ever had.
The video eventually caught the attention of Planet Fitness’ official TikTok account, which responded publicly by asking the woman to send a direct message with her name, the gym location, and additional details so the company could investigate. According to katehallwilson, the conversation later continued through email. However, she has not yet posted a follow-up explaining whether the issue has been resolved.
Louisiana Gym Dispute Draws Online Attention
The video’s comment section was filled with viewers urging the woman to escalate the dispute beyond the local gym. Many said the manager should have been able to immediately explain any outstanding balance, arguing that members have the right to know exactly what they are being charged for.
Others encouraged her to report the location to Planet Fitness’ corporate office, with some saying they would have contacted corporate while still standing at the front desk. “Forging your signature is ILLEGAL,” one user wrote.
Several commenters also shared similar experiences involving gym memberships and disputed charges. Some recalled continuing to receive bills after attempting to cancel their memberships, while others said they ultimately had to dispute the payments through their banks or credit card companies. A few compared the situation to problems they had experienced with other fitness chains, saying billing disputes have become an all-too-common frustration.
One commenter who identified themselves as a former Planet Fitness employee claimed the manager’s alleged actions did not match company policy. According to the commenter, employees can normally see exactly what a member owes and why. They also claimed staff are only allowed to sign on behalf of a member in very limited situations, such as when the account holder has died or has been permanently banned from the facility.
Going to the gym is supposed to leave your wallet lighter because of exercise, not because of a mystery $500 bill.
