It isn’t just women who can be labeled as ‘Karen’; men can, too. In fact, there are plenty of men out there who feel entitled to being right, regardless of what’s at stake. We’ve seen these male Karens get upset at electric vehicle drivers and even heckle comedians while on stage. Now, a Reddit video has surfaced depicting a group of people throwing water at a man who decided to ignore a ‘No Smoking’ sign.
The video, posted by user Shadow_Heartt, depicts women working at a food stand tossing water at a British tourist. The man was smoking a cigarette and refused to put it out despite a very visible ‘No Smoking’ sign on the stand. In response to his refusal, the woman douses the cigarette and the man in water.
Fortunately, the man doesn’t retaliate physically but stands in the street, trying to argue with the people around him. After a few seconds of deliberation, the man and what seemed to be the people he was with decided to walk away. The comments immediately flood with criticism of the man’s actions, especially considering where he was.
“dont mess with Thai people , they give you that nice friendly smile right up until they f*** you up”
The confrontation definitely wasn’t a matter of language, because the ‘No Smoking’ sign was written in English and had the universal symbol on it. So, I’m unsure what the man was trying to accomplish by being rude while on vacation. In fact, he was so rude that other commenters shared stories about their own experiences witnessing a similar event while in Thailand.
“Fully agree. I found the Thai people to be lovely when I visited but the appalling behaviour of some tourists was giving me second-hand embarrassment.”
Hopefully, the man learned his lesson and remembers to read and acknowledge the signs around him the next time he’s in a foreign country. He never knows who he might offend.
