Judgment day came early for a man who stole a pair of sunglasses from a mall in Houston, Texas, and broke his legs while trying to escape. In a video posted on Reddit, the suspect was seen lifting a pair of sunglasses from a rack at The Galleria and putting them on.
Shortly after, he posted a video on his social media, showing off the pair of black, studded glasses which he had stolen. He even tagged someone in the video, bragging that he told them he was going to get the glasses, and he did.
Later in the footage, the suspect was seen running through crowds of people in the mall as an off-duty officer chased him. In a split-second decision, the thief decided to climb over the railing and jump to the second floor, which happened to be an ice skating rink. As soon as he landed on the ice, his legs awkwardly bent to the sides, visibly broken.
The suspect, who was now immobile, had no option but to lie down on his back. He then brought out his phone and appeared to be texting someone hurriedly. Several ice skaters approached him to find out what had happened, and eventually, police officers arrived at the scene.
Social media users had several reactions to the viral clip. One user commented, “Glasses cost him two legs. Definitely not worth it,” and another wrote, “He really thought that an ice rink would be a good idea for a landing spot. This is truly the dumbest sh*t I’ve ever seen.”
One user joked that the suspect brought out his phone to update his followers on what happened. “He immediately gets back on his phone to post to social media, ‘Just chilling at the mall #GumblyLegs #wheels.’” Another user pointed out the severity of the suspect’s situation, writing:
“Omg forgot he’s also going to jail lol. Holy sh*t dude stole so gets what’s coming but I can’t imagine a worse situation to be in. Both legs destroyed. No walking. Intense rehab. And the slammer, dude didn’t think his life would change so drastically when he woke up that day.”
Addressing the thief’s poor decision, one Redditor wrote, “I mean, out of all the things to do. There are stairs and escalators right behind him, and two exits are to the right of where he jumped. I guess if you’re dumb enough to steal, you are dumb enough for this.”
According to KHOU11, it was confirmed that the suspect had broken both of his legs. However, the full extent of his injuries is still unknown. He remains unidentified and has not yet been charged.
