A viral video circulating on X shows two women recording a mirror selfie inside what appears to be a shopping center bathroom in Brooklyn, New York, when an unexpected third party casually joins the frame. In the clip, a man wearing traditional clothing exits one of the stalls, walks past the women, and calmly begins washing his hands at the sink, seemingly unfazed by the situation or the phone cameras capturing it all. The caption of the video reads, “A man was caught using the women’s bathroom at a shopping center in Brooklyn.”

As with most things online, the 20-second clip immediately divided opinions and sparked a flood of reactions. Some users couldn’t help but poke fun at the man’s confidence. One person joked, “He walked in like he owned the place,” while another added simply, “He owns the bathroom.” Others took a more understanding stance, arguing that it could’ve been an honest mistake. “I think every man has gone in the wrong one on accident at least once,” one user wrote. “Who hasn’t used the women’s room when the men’s is out of order?” another asked.

What the Law Says in New York City

In New York, including Brooklyn, there is no law prohibiting a man from using a woman’s restroom if he does so for a lawful reason, such as relieving himself. Under the NYC Human Rights Law, individuals are protected from discrimination based on gender identity and expression. This means that people have the legal right to use single-sex facilities that align with their gender identity, and denying or restricting that access could be considered a violation.

The New York law was designed to ensure inclusivity and safety for all individuals, emphasizing that gender-segregated spaces must be accessible based on identity rather than biological sex, a distinction that often fuels debate in viral moments like this one.
