Man Tries to Kidnap Toddler From Virginia Mall, Parents Stop Him Just in Time: ‘Never Take Your Eyes Off Your Kids!’

Always, always watch your kids in public

Two things you should always keep an eye on are your bank balance and your children—especially your children. A family went shopping at the Fair Oaks Mall in Virginia, and all was normal as the dad watched the two kids in a play area while the mom went shopping. However, while the father was distracted playing with one of the children, the other wandered off for a few seconds. Within moments, a random stranger casually picked up the toddler and walked away.

Fairfax Co. Police shared this video of an abduction at Fair Oaks Mall, which was foiled by the child's parents. More details on @7NewsDC at 11, including the suspect's lengthy criminal history. He was released without paying bond for a felony weeks before the alleged abduction. pic.twitter.com/dGGMepUz3L

It wasn’t until the culprit had made it to another floor of the mall when the mom spotted him holding her daughter. She stopped and confronted him, after which he gave her daughter back and rushed out of the mall. Police later tracked down and arrested the creepy kidnapper, who turned out to be a delinquent with multiple felonies under his belt. It goes without saying that many people, especially parents, are happy this man is behind bars. The president of Virginians For Safety told 7News that “It’s striking that somebody could do this in broad daylight and no one would notice.”

To cover up his crime, the kidnapper told the local Virginia police that he was simply trying to return the child to her parents. Clearly, he was watching close by when she wandered out of the play area with her dad and sibling. So, there’s no doubt he knew exactly where at least one of the parents was. And while it’s not technically ideal to judge a book by its cover, the fact that he had already racked up so many offenses, including violence against his own family, should be a possible indicator of his actual intentions in this story.

“Never take your eyes off your kids! Omg 😔,” remarks TikTok commenter, and while plenty of other online users agree with her, a large majority thinks he was actually trying to help. “Seems like he found a lost child and saved her,” says an individual. “It looks like he was just trying to help,” agreed another. Whatever people choose to believe, most parents would probably not want any random stranger to touch, let alone pick up and walk off with their child. The police made the right call with this one!
