Earlier today, the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave an update on peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. In his speech, Rubio said that since the war is “in another continent…it’s not our war per se.” But based on what the US Government has been getting up to lately, that’s definitely not the norm.
Rubio contradicted that statement in the same press conference by claiming that the USA was the only country in the world which could end the war between Russia and Ukraine. The war began with an attempted invasion by Russia in 2022 and has continued for the last three years.
Rubio’s statement garnered attention and large-scale criticism online. “Will someone tell this idiot that Venezuela is also on another continent?” one X user wrote.
Lying to the American People
In the last week, the United States has seized two Venezuelan oil tankers. This seizure is part of a campaign by Trump, who claims he is targeting Venezuelan drug smugglers on their way to the USA. Trump claims this is part of his promise to end the illegal import of drugs into the country. However, with the seizure of two oil tankers, it seems likely that this is another false claim of many made by the current president of the United States.
Both Trump and Secretary of Defense (more recently and embarrassingly dubbed Secretary of “War”) Pete Hegseth have also come under fire for shooting down Venezuelan boats in international waters. The Pentagon continues to claim that the boats were smuggling drugs like Fentanyl into the US. However, no evidence has been provided to prove that claim. Hegseth even refused to show the full video recorded during one such downing of a boat, where he purportedly ordered his men to kill survivors of an initial strike.
Whether the USA actually helps bring peace to Ukraine remains to be seen. However, the country’s involvement in needlessly antagonizing another country, on yet another continent, doesn’t exactly inspire faith in its ability to do so. At the same conference, Rubio also called the Venezuelan government an illegitimate regime that “openly cooperates with criminal and terrorist elements.” But the truth of that statement remains to be seen.
