Note: The following figures were compiled from Box Office Mojo.
Ridley Scott’s The Martian held strong at the domestic weekend box office yet again, winning with a gross of $37 million.
This represents only a 31.9% change in totals, as word of mouth has seemingly greatly helped the film, starrring Matt Damon. It also represents a strong sum for this time of the year. Last year, Gone Girl came in at #1, grossing $26 million. The adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name went on to gross $368 million worldwide, and it looks like The Martian is on track to a similar figure, as it has already grossed $277 million worldwide.
Hotel Transylvania 2 came in 2nd place again, with a total of $20 million. The film has grossed $116 million at the U.S. domestic box office. It is unclear if Hotel Transylvania 2 will have the legs to surpass its predecessor, as the original grossed $148 million for Sony in 2012.
Pan and The Walk were the big losers this weekend. Pan only grossed $15 million domestically, and an additional $25 million overseas. It is unclear if Pan will make up its hefty $150 million production budget. The film opened in 3,515 theaters across the United States.
The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and directed by Robert Zemeckis, added 2,061 theaters, making this weekend a proper commercial release for casual audiences, and only grossed $3.7 million in the U.S., despite receiving favorable reviews across the board.
Smaller, more awards-friendly films fared well at this weekend’s box office. Steve Jobs, the biopic about the late co-founder of Apple, earned $521,522 in 4 theaters. 99 Homes, a drama starring Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon about real life events concerning house forfeiture in California, earned $647,825 across 691 theaters. It’s a wonder it is not a complete bomb, as the film has received very little marketing but has earned great reviews across the board. Sicario came in 5th, earning $7.5 million. The film featured Emily Blunt and Benecio Del Toro and is about Mexican drug cartels. It looks set to make back its $30 million production budget.
