Blade co-creator Marv Wolfman returns to Marvel this November for an all-new What If…? Dark story. The legendary writer is teaming up with artist David Cutler for What If…? Dark: Tomb of Dracula #1. Now, Wolfman is diving back into the mythos of the characters he helped create and introduce into the Marvel Universe. Only this time around, Wolfman is answering the question of what would happen if Dracula transformed Blade into a vampire. How would the Marvel Universe look if a vampire hunter was a vampire?
Marv Wolfman Returns To His Roots
This new horror tale is the perfect story for Marv Wolfman to sink his teeth into. After all, he is responsible for the two main characters involved: Blade and Dracula. Over 50 years ago, the writer introduced the iconic Dracula into the Marvel Universe and helped to co-create his arch-nemesis Blade. Plus, he had a hand in bringing Dracula’s daughter, Lilith Drake, to Marvel. So, who better to craft a unique story that ponders how differently these characters could have been in the comics?
This new What…If? Dark story reshapes the 1972 classic The Tomb of Dracula that introduced Blade. Speaking to Marvel, Marv Wolfman shared that it is a thrill to revisit that story and the characters that helped jumpstart his career—meanwhile, Marvel’s Exec. Editor Nick Lowe calls getting Wolfman to return to this story a “bucket list check-off” of sorts. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Marv has not lost his touch in the 50-plus years since the original.
What If…? Dark Series
Marvel announced its new What If…? Dark series back in March. It is a series of one-shots from creators all across the industry. While the original What If…? series simply showed alternate paths for certain Marvel characters, this series is more ominous. For example, Gerry Conway and Jody Houser’s What If…? Dark: Spider-Gwen shows Peter Parker/Spider-Man dying in the incident that originally killed Gwen Stacy.
Now, Marvel is giving Blade some fangs and seeing how his time on the other side would affect the iconic vampire slayer. What If…? Dark: Tomb of Dracula #1 is on sale November 8.
