Since its announcement, Marvel’s upcoming film Avengers: Infinity War was scheduled to be two separate movies. But now Marvel has said that there will be a change of the movie’s title. This change now suggests that Infinity War will be one, single film and the second one will be titled something completely different. Though Marvel is still planning to release the two Avengers films in 2018 and 2019, they are no longer going to be two parts of the same story.

The first film will still be called Avengers: Infinity War, but the second movie has been left untitled for now and will no longer to be known as Infinity War Part II. We can expect Infinity War to hit theaters on May 4, 2018, and the ‘Untitled Avengers’ film to follow a year later on May 3, 2019. Both of the films will be directed by the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, who also directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.

For now, it is unclear what this big change will mean for the films’ story lines. Although they will be obviously disconnected from each other now, like all movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can expect that there will be a common thread that connects them, and it will be interesting to see what that thread will be, especially considering this will be the seventh film in Phase Three.

It is no secret that two-part movies have been overused in Hollywood, and we have all been beat over the head with them one too many times. From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (which was actually a necessary two-part film), to The Hunger Games and Divergent, two-parters are becoming too-tiresome and more often than not the second part falls flat and is unjustified in its creation in the first place. Changing Infinity War to a single film could be a good move on Marvel’s part.
