The Black Eyed Peas have always looked like they were plucked straight out of a comic book, from Will.I.Am’s audacious outfits to Fergie’s superheroine figure. It looks like Marvel agreed, as the comic book group announced an original graphic novel called Masters of the Sun: The Zombie Chronicles.
According to Billboard, the comic will be drawn by Benjamin Jackendoff and artist Damion Scott, with the plot being written by the band’s frontman himself, Will.I.Am. Set in a futuristic world, the story begins with the city of Los Angeles under attack by aliens, while humans are morphing into zombies.
Zulu-X is tasked with fighting an ancient order of beings using whatever he has at his fingertips, including his musical prowess. While this will be the musicians first foray into, the frontman seems excited to explore the cultural similarities between the two mediums.
“The Black Eyed Peas and I have begun a new journey,” says Will.i.am. “We’ve been working on this original story for years and partnering with Marvel to bring this book to life is more than a dream come true.”
Marvel’s artists seem just as excited, as editor Alex Alonso explained how thrilled they are to work with the group in regards to deeply personal stories Masters of the Sun will explore. The comic will delve into real life social allegories in its pages, including L.A. gangs, hip-hop and street dance culture.
While many may be skeptical of the group’s transition, they aren’t the first to venture from music to comics. Former My Chemical Romance lead singer Gerard Way has published a number of different comics, including writing for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Edge Of Spider-Verse series back in 2014.
Masters of the Sun: The Zombie Chronicles is scheduled for release in July. For more information, be sure to stay tuned to the site for updates, as well as all of your Nerdy News!
