Marvel has announced it will be launching a new Eternals comic this November with an impressive creative team. Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Uncanny X-Men) will write. Esad Ribic (King Thor, Secret Wars) will provide the art. And Matthew Wilson (The Mighty Thor) will be the colorist. Issue #1 is also receiving a variant cover by BossLogic, which implements an MCU change to one of the group’s members. Marvel revealed the upcoming comic on its official site alongside the following announcement trailer:
Marvel didn’t reveal much in regards to the plot. The Eternals are at constant war with the Deviants, protecting people of Earth in secret. However, Marvel promises the new book will focus on a discovery that will change the Eternals. But it will also change everything we thought we knew about them. Outside of a few Star Wars comics, Kieron Gillen hasn’t written for Marvel in a few years. But he nevertheless expressed his excitement on taking on the team:
I said if I was ever to do a book again at Marvel, it would have to be something I’ve never done before. This is exactly that. This is me teaming up with literally my favourite artist of the epic, taking one of those lightning-storm Kirby visions and re-making it to be as new as the day it was forged. While Esad makes whole worlds on the page, I’m applying all the skills I’ve developed when I was away. It’s a lot. It’s everything. There’s enough scale packed in here that I believe that when you look at the comic, you’ll see the pages slightly bulge. Essentially ‘Eternal’ has to mean ‘never going out of style,’ which means we’re aiming for ‘instant classic.’ Also — fight scenes, horror, human drama, emotions, explosions. Comics!”
Had things gone according to plan, Marvel would have launched Eternals #1 alongside the upcoming MCU movie. Unfortunately, Covid-19 forced Disney to reschedule all of its upcoming releases in April. Eternals will now release on February 12th, 2021.
