Frankly, the quality of the TV series that Marvel Television has produced with Netflix has greatly exceeded the movies lately. Not only are they able to delve into darker material, but often times the characters are much richer. In fact, these characters are so strong, that the prospect of seeing them together in The Defenders is nearly as exciting as The Avengers was. In the meantime, Marvel Television has quite a bit of programming to hold us over with. Along with announcing the third season of Daredevil, several trailers were shown for the upcoming group of Defenders shows.
Luke Cage

By far the longest trailer of the bunch, Marvel’s Luke Cage is so far getting by on style. The trailer doesn’t hint to any major story beats. Instead, they opt to show off an extended action sequence of Luke decimating some henchmen. Frankly, it looks a little cheesy, especially considering his gritty introduction in Jessica Jones. Perhaps it’s the Woo Tang Clan music that throws the tone off, but there’s a flatness to the action that’s very worrying. I assume that because Marvel Television has already acquainted us with this character, that they didn’t need to show much in the way of a story. I wish that they had.
Iron Fist

While certainly a much shorter trailer than Cage, Iron Fist managed to pack in a ton more intrigue. They show some interesting pieces of Danny Rand’s past. Particularly him being picked up by monks after being lost at sea. In fact, the whole trailer feels very reminiscent of Doctor Strange, which will hopefully prove to be a good thing. While getting a look at Finn Jones in full costume would have really made it, this was a solid first look.
The Defenders

Strangely enough, the most intriguing trailer by far was the one with no footage at all. With the strangely well chosen Come As You Are playing in the background, the graphics flash over hints to all of the established characters. The bow on top, Scott Glenn’s line delivery at the end. It really hits home why these series work. These are some of Marvel’s most flawed characters, and seeing them come together as a unit is going to be a treat in 2017.
