Have you vaccinated your children?

The Maryland Department of Health has recently declared a measles outbreak in three Maryland counties: St. Mary’s, Carroll, and Cecil. This enraged some Maryland residents, who blamed the outbreak on people who oppose vaccination.

According to the department, 14 new cases were discovered in the state, bringing the total number of cases to 31. Unvaccinated people account for all of the cases, which are largely concentrated in the three counties, with St. Mary’s having 13 people infected.

Despite declaring the outbreak, officials say there is currently no evidence of widespread community transmission. Most of the cases reported to the authorities involved household contact with infected people. Residents were advised to get vaccinated and keep their distance from anyone showing symptoms, as unvaccinated people have a 90% chance of being infected if they come into contact with someone who has measles.

Maryland Reacts to Measles Outbreak

Residents on Reddit’s r/Maryland were very angry about the outbreak and largely blamed anti-vaxxers, as well as the Republican Party, for it. Someone wrote: “I’m sure it’s a complete coincidence that these are the three reddest counties in the state.”

Another one said: “Combination of Highest concentration of vaccine deniers and concentration of people. Not surprised.” Another seemingly angry user complained: “Absolutely ridiculous that this is a headline in 2026. What a world we are living in.”

What really irritated most people in the thread was their belief that parents were failing to protect their own children: “These parents got their vaccines as children, most likely never had to suffer through any of these preventable diseases, but yet they make their own children suffer because some [expletive] with a podcast knows better than medical professionals. I feel so bad for their children.”

In the same vein, someone else added: “Kids need more rights in this country. It shouldn’t be legal to force a person with no bodily autonomy into a position to die of a perfectly preventable disease.”

As the outbreak continues, so does the criticism of parents who don’t vaccinate their children. One individual had harsh words for parents who fail to do so: “All anti-vaxxers should lose custody of their kids.”
