Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen says he will continue demanding accountability after 47 senators backed his effort seeking answers about nine Americans killed in the West Bank. The resolution ultimately failed to advance, but Van Hollen celebrated the vote as the strongest Senate support the effort has received so far, and blamed Republicans for blocking it.
The Democrats’ push also reopened a much broader argument about American deaths connected to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While some commenters questioned why senators would oppose an effort seeking answers about American citizens killed in the West Bank, others turned the question back on Van Hollen and accused him of giving insufficient attention to Americans killed or taken hostage by Hamas.
In the X post, Senator Chris Van Hollen writes, “Tonight, 47 Senators supported my resolution to get accountability for the 9 Americans killed on the West Bank & for Palestinians who face injustices daily. That’s more support than we’ve ever had in this fight. Republicans blocked us, but we won’t stop until we get justice.”
The Senate voted 47-51 on September 29 against discharging Senate Resolution 852, preventing the measure from advancing. The vote largely followed party lines, although Kentucky Senator Paul Rand supported the motion while Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Fetterman opposed it.
Among the information requested were assessments concerning investigations into the deaths of American citizens killed by Israeli settlers or Israeli forces. The measure also sought information about violence against Palestinian civilians and the treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention.
Van Hollen has pursued the issue for months, joining other senators in letters calling for investigations into the American deaths and urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to address settler violence. His office has argued that neither the Israeli nor the American governments have provided adequate accountability for the nine deaths.
Comments and Reactions to Chris Van Hollen’s West Bank Resolution
Some commenters supported Van Hollen and questioned why greater scrutiny of American deaths would be controversial, with one person asking, “Why wouldn’t the Republicans want to hold the murderers of American citizens accountable? Israel is above the law.“
