BioWare has been teasing some big news for its upcoming title, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and today we finally got it: a release date for March.
For those out of the loop, Andromeda is the long-awaited fourth installment in BioWare’s hugely popular RPG series. It features a new protagonist named Ryder. It is up to Ryder to explore the galaxy on behalf of the human race, in an attempt to find planets to colonize 600 years after the wild ride that was Mass Effect 3.
In a similar vein to the other games in the series, Andromeda will naturally feature the classic third-person shooting that fans have grown accustomed to, as well as have its usual strong emphasis on open-world exploration across the galaxy. According to BioWare, this newest title in the series will be their most ambitious one yet- they are telling new stories, creating new species, and introducing new gameplay systems.
If Andromeda’s March release date sounds familiar to some, it is because it is extremely close to that of the Nintendo Switch. Despite the close proximity of the dates (and probably to the disappointment of many) the game’s producer, Michael Gamble, stated in a recent interview that there weren’t any plans to release Andromeda on Nintendo’s upcoming console.
“We’re not planning on it,” Gamble said. “If the Switch launches and everyone is just yammering for ‘Mass Effect’, who knows. We never want to close doors like that.”
We can be expecting more news leading up to the game’s release date. For now, BioWare’s General Manager Aaryn Flynn has commented on the excitement that has been building in the community, writing the “passion you have for the franchise continues to drive us. And now, we’re just a couple of months away from delivering a brand new Mass Effect experience to you for the first time in five years – richer, deeper and ready for exploration.”
Mass Effect: Andromeda will be released on March 21 in North America for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It will be released on March 23rd across Europe.
