Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed the stock market is in complete chaos. Thanks to Trump’s tariffs, the economy is currently in a nosedive. And while regular folks are no doubt feeling the heat the most, even the rich aren’t immune. Massachusetts media star Dave Portnoy is also taking a big hit. He recently shared his woes online, revealing that he’s lost $20 million in stocks and crypto.
But that’s not the whole story. Not long ago, Dave Portnoy also went live on X just a day after Trump’s tariffs were announced. With the stock market in free fall, he admitted he had already lost $7 million. Despite the hit, he insisted he still trusted Trump, saying the president was smart. Well, that belief just got repaid in full as Portnoy now says he’s down $20 million.
“I went super viral when I said I lost $7 million. I’d kill to be back to losing $7 million,” Portnoy said. He added that he didn’t even dare to look at his stocks too closely but estimated his losses to be around $20 million, which made up about 10 to 15 percent of his net worth.
Even after losing more money, the Massachusetts media star still stood by his trust in Trump. “But I’m still here, that’s the game. That’s what I’m in. Do I like it? No,” Portnoy said. It seems like he might still be stuck in the denial stage.
Don’t expect too much sympathy for Portnoy, though. It seems a lot of internet users are feeling a healthy dose of schadenfreude watching him lose money. “Only 85-90% to go… Every single one of these chuds voted for Trump on the presumption that his policies would only affect the people they wanted to suffer. It’s actually so cathartic that they’re also suffering,” one Redditor commented.
Others took the opportunity to mock the Massachusetts media star for continuing to support Trump. His refusal to consider voting for Kamala Harris sounds even more absurd given the situation he’s in. “The fact that he would rather lose 20 million dollars than have voted for Kamala Harris, and is unable to admit that he was wrong for voting for Trump says so much about him,” another user remarked.
Many users simply posted memes mocking Portnoy’s financial pain and suffering. Others criticized him for airing his complaints online despite his wealth. “I lost 2500.00 and feel like shit. To lose that much, you’re still pretty comfortable. Quit your bitching,” one user commented.
