Everyone has different parenting styles. Some parents are real sticklers for the rules, while others go with the flow. However, one mom in Massachusetts is taking a lot of heat on social media after sharing what she thought was a cute video of herself and her young son attempting an online trend. Unfortunately, the comment section turned into a debate, and it seemed that everyone had an opinion about the behavior they witnessed in the clip.
In the TikTok video, the Massachusetts mama is seen standing at the grocery store with her son. The pair is standing back to back as they surprise each other with snacks they picked out for a Halloween-themed movie night.
The clip starts off strong as both mother and son choose the exact same brand and flavor of potato chips. They quickly move on to the drinks. While both picked similar drinks, the little boy only grabbed one bottle, while the mother chose a six-pack. She told him that because he liked her drink and there was more of it that they would go with her pick.

Okay, that seems understandable. Although they could have gotten more of the flavor he chose. The boy seemed a bit disappointed, but he moved passed it. Then came a quick meal. The pair were on the same page yet again when they chose ramen noodles.
However, the boy chose two packages of the same flavor, while the mom had two different flavors, one for the son and one that she liked. She told him that they would choose hers since it had the flavors they both enjoyed.
Again, the son moved on from the mother, rejecting his choice. However, the desert category really divided the mother and son. The Boston mom pulled out two packages of ready-to-bake cookie dough. Meanwhile, the little boy was excited when he shared his pick, a box of spooky-themed cupcakes.
It was clear that the mother was not happy with his choice. She seemingly didn’t want the cupcakes, or possibly didn’t want to have to bake them. She pointed out that he didn’t even grab frosting for the cupcakes, and told him that they’d play rock, paper, scissors to choose.
She won the game and said that her son could choose which one of the cookie dough packages he wanted. This is when he had a mini meltdown. It was more than obvious that he’d had enough of his mom vetoing his choices. He was angry, and the mom told him he could either get on board with the cookies or they’d put all of the treats back on the shelf.
After getting back on track, it was time to show each other what they chose for candy options. The mother pulled out a bag of Sour Patch Kids. The son chose a chocolate bar. After some discussion, he decided that he wanted to take his mother’s candy choice.
Finally, after all of that, it was time to pick the movie. Instead of letting her son choose outright, they again played rock, paper, scissors. This time, the son won and decided on Ghostbusters, which lifted his spirits.
Meanwhile, TikTok wasn’t very happy with the Massachusetts mom refusing most of her son’s ideas. “He looks so sad,” one person wrote. “Threatening to put everything back cause he don’t want no cookies is crazy,” another said. “Ruining the experience,” a third stated.
However, not all the comments were harsh. Some sided with the mother’s decisions. “He was picking for HIMSELF she was picking for BOTH of them. Sometimes saying put it all back is the only way to teach him to not be so selfish,” a fourth comment read.
It seems that the little boy learned a hard lesson, but all in all he likely still had a fun movie night with his mom with snacks that she knew he’d like, even if he didn’t pick them out.
