Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced criticism after challenging what she described as acceptance of street homelessness. She claimed some people within the system focus on improving conditions for those living outdoors rather than addressing their homelessness. Her remarks drew scrutiny of her administration’s record as she seeks reelection in California.
In the video, Bass said, “There are some people in this system who think it’s okay to be on the street.” She described their approach as trying to “make sure life is better for you on the street.” However, she did not identify the individuals or organizations she was criticizing.
Rejecting that approach, the mayor declared, “People that look like me have a problem with that.” She objected to anyone accepting that people should remain homeless while returning to comfortable homes themselves. Bass did not outline specific policy changes during the remarks.
Karen Bass Faces Backlash Over Los Angeles Homelessness Record
Bass’s remarks prompted critics to question her leadership and the city’s progress in addressing homelessness.
“Ma’am, you said you’d end street homelessness by 2026. There’s only two months left,” one user wrote.
Another questioned her criticism of unnamed people within the system, demanding, “Name the people who said it’s ok. We will wait….”
The discussion also turned to housing policies. One response stated, “I have a problem with a mayor and city council who do everything they can to make it impossible and expensive to build new housing in their city. That’s you.”
Others questioned how the city spends homelessness funding. One person argued, “Seems like a waste and fraud issue to fund NGOs and the help isn’t making it to the people in need. That’s the issue.”
The criticism extended to Bass’s political future, with one user urging, “Maybe consider finding a new line of work”
Still, another expressed hope for improvement despite criticizing her record: “You have objectively failed. But we are stuck with you, so I am rooting for you to not fail.”
With her reelection bid underway, questions remain about how Bass intends to address homelessness and meet her earlier commitments.
