The Rom-Com Queen Meg Ryan will be starring in and directing the film What Happens Later. The film is based on the play Shooting Star by the American playwright Steven Dietz. Bleecker Street has the U.S. rights to the rom-com. Dietz co-wrote the screenplay with Meg Ryan and novelist Kirk Lynn. The X-Files alum David Duchovny will star opposite Ryan. The film What Happens Later focuses on ex-lovers Willa (Ryan) and Bill (Duchovny), who find themselves reunited when they’re snowed in at an airport. Jonathan Duffy and Kelly Williams, under Ten Acre Films, are producing the Bleecker Street rom-com. Laura D. Smith and Kristin Mann are also producing the film. It will start production later this year in Bentonville, Arkansas. Ryan announced her upcoming film on her Instagram with a movie poster of What Happens Later. It’s been thirteen years since Ryan has starred in a rom-com.
What Has Meg Ryan Been Up to the Past Two Decades?
The director and actor Meg Ryan made her name in rom-com films. Her first leading role and breakthrough performance in When Harry Met Sally.. launched her into stardom. She went on to star in rom-com classics such as Sleepless in Seattle (pictured above), You’ve Got Mail, and French Kiss. Meg Ryan didn’t want to just be known for playing the girl-next-door in films, so she took on more serious roles in films The Doors, When a Man Loves a Woman and Courage Under Fire. The last rom-com she starred in, not including her upcoming film What Happens Later, was Serious Moonlight. She made her directorial debut with the 2015 film Ithaca, where she reunited with former rom-com co-star Tom Hanks. Now she will be putting on her directing hat once again for the Bleecker Street rom-com film What Happens Later.
The Bleecker Street rom-com has no official release date.
