Meghan Markle plays the victim card in the latest episode of her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast, discussing miscarriage with CEO Reshma Saujani. The Duchess of Sussex officially launched her Lemonada podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, on April 8. Her podcast features conversations with prominent female entrepreneurs, delving into their journey to success and subtle glimpses into their personal lives. This week, the duchess welcomed the CEO and founder of Girls Who Code, a charity headquartered in New York, with outlets across America and various parts of the world.

During their sitdown on the April 15 podcast episode, Meghan Markle and her fellow female founder, Reshma Saujani, discussed subjects ranging from motherhood to business. The talk veered towards more sensitive topics like their heartbreaking miscarriages, and how difficult it was to keep turning up for the world while navigating the painful experience. Meghan brought up Reshma’s serial miscarriages, which the Illinois-born entrepreneur has publicly discussed on occasions. The duchess divulged,

“I’ll bring this up if you’re comfortable talking about it because I know you’ve spoken publicly about it as you’re co-founder of Girls Who Code, all the interpersonal things that are happening for you at that time and the miscarriages that you’ve experienced.”

Right after casting light on Reshma Saujani’s painful experiences miscarrying several babies, Meghan Markle created a parallel to her and Prince Harry’s 2020 miscarriage. She explained how the experience forced her to learn detachment, something Reshma could relate to all too well. Megan divulged,

“I’ve spoken about the miscarriage that we experienced. I think in some parallel way, when you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for and to be able to be okay at a certain point to let something go, something go that you plan to love for a long time.”

Reshma commended Meghan Markle’s candid analysis of the aftermath of a miscarriage in her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast, admitting no one has ever “seen it that way.” The founder further detailed how she went about her post-miscarriage phases, revealing she handed the reins of her business over to her team to allow her a chance to “breathe” after dealing with her string of miscarriages.

Despite Reshma’s thumbs up at Meghan’s understanding of her heartbreaking experiences, critics believe the duchess handled the emotional moment terribly. According to them, Meghan all but dismissed her guest’s plight after her account, to quickly shine the spotlight on her own “tragic” miscarriage, in her usual penchant for portraying herself as a victim. Several critics deemed her candid insight into her 2020 miscarriage as just another attention-seeking tactic. Reacting, one wrote,

“Look at Megs playing victim, again. *Yawn*.”

Another commented,

“Shut up MM, and you will do anything to try and be relevant. All you do is seek attention, and it’s pathetic. Go live that private life and spare us all the drama.”

Another noted that Megan was “attention seeking, again,” while a third noted that the duchess would do anything to stay in the news, adding, “I’m sorry, I don’t believe any of it.” Many chastised the mom of two for making a fuss out of a “miscarriage” and spotlighting her victimhood several years after it happened, rather than “move past it,” or “deal with it in private.” However, many sprang to her defence, noting that a miscarriage wasn’t something one could easily move past or forget. Women in the comment section with similar experiences stuck up for the 43-year-old, admitting they, too, like her, often found themselves reflecting on the painful experience.

Notably, Meghan Markle first opened up about her miscarriage back in November 2020, admitting she lost her baby prematurely in July of that year. She penned the painful experience in a 1000-word essay for The New York Times, recounting the painful moment she realized she was losing her baby. She also described “losing a child” as “carrying an almost unbearable grief,” a barely discussed subject.

Meghan Markle’s revelation about her miscarriage comes just a week after she went candid about her personal health struggles after welcoming her child. The royal-turned-entrepreneur, who shares son Archie and daughter Lilibeth with her husband Prince Harry, admitted she experienced the rare and “scary” medical condition, postpartum preeclampsia. The proud mom discussed how she had to cope with attending to her public duties while silently battling the potentially life-threatening condition.

Her revelation sparked backlash from critics, who accused her of seeking attention nd exaggerating her condition. Regardless of what victim narrative critics believe Meghan is pushing, there’s no denying her accounts are real struggles experienced by women, even prominent founders, and hence, should not be trivialized, nor her actual message dismissed.
