The buzz of her “scandalous” twerking video is yet to wane, and Meghan Markle already finds herself engulfed in more royal embarrassment as details from her past tours and royal engagements surface. A former actress and lifestyle enthusiast, Meghan became engulfed in British royal affairs when she married Prince Harry in 2018. During her brief stint as a working royal, the duchess accompanied her husband on various royal engagements, including charitable outreach events, honorary appearances, and tours to other countries around the world. Two years after their nuptials, the couple decided to bid farewell to royal life and relocate to California, where they still reside.
Embarrassing tidbits from Meghan’s life as a working royal have come to light several years later. Royal expert Tina Bown has accused the Suits alum of embarking on her royal tours and engagements halfheartedly. The expert went on to insinuate that the royal bride frowned at the idea of fulfilling these royal duties voluntarily, without any paychecks attached.
Meghan Despised Visit to Australia and Hoped to Get Paid

In her book, Palace Papers, Brown cited one particular royal tour: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s engagements-packed trip to Australia soon after their wedding. Brown revealed that the Suits alum hated every second of it and found the lineup of engagements pointless.
She explained how the duchess enjoyed the spotlight these royal engagements cast on her, but never understood the point of their interactions with commoners, which involved “walkabouts, shaking hands with countless strangers.” Another side of her royal life that Meghan hated was having to work without receiving monetary compensation or wages. Meghan allegedly let this slip at least once, to the hearing of her royal staff. Brown wrote,
“According to several members of staff, she was heard to say on at least one occasion: ‘I can’t believe I’m not getting ai for this.”
Notably, these interactions with the public during such royal visits put them more in the spotlight, increasing the popularity of the then newly married duchess and her Prince. Eventually, many came to admire the new addition to the British royal family, not just for the generational change she represented within the monarchy, but for her warm nature and kindness when interacting with the public. However, Brown’s revelations suggest these “outward” actions may have been just a hypocritical show.
Meghan and Harry Keep the Flame Burning With Post-Royal Engagements

Despite her supposed whining, Meghan Markle, along with her husband, completed their Australian tour, carrying out 76 royal engagements during the period. While royal duties have become a thing of the past for the Sussex couple after they quit their royal lives in 2020, Harry and Meghan have strived to stay in touch with that aspect of royalty. The couple has spearheaded several self-funded charitable initiatives and embarked on tours to countries such as Nigeria and Colombia.
Most recently, Prince Harry visited South Africa and Lesotho in October to support programs affiliated with the Sentebale Charity, following his controversial fallout with the charity’s head. The Duke has also continued to speak at public events, sharing inspiring nuggets that have touched lives around the globe. Meanwhile, Meghan Markle remains committed to growing her financial empire post-royal life, focusing on business engagements in between these non-royal tours. Together, the pair has continued their humanitarian commitments in their unique way, despite the widespread vitriol that has trailed them.
