To raise money and awareness for Red Nose Day, Dungeon Master and voice actor of Critical Role, Matthew Mercer, will DM a game with Stephen Colbert. The late-night talk show host talks about Dungeons and Dragons often on his show, recently interviewing actor Joe Manganiello regarding the tabletop RPG. Fans of both shows have been curious for a while if Colbert would ever appear as a guest player on Critical Role. In the past, the show has hosted author Patrick Rothfuss, D&D story designer Chris Perkins, and Joe Manganiello.
Red Nose Day is an annual fundraising effort to end child poverty. Mercer will DM a one-on-one Dungeons and Dragons game with Colbert on May 23rd. To bring in donations and get fans involved, polls have been set up in a “choose your own adventure” style. Fans are allowed to vote on Colbert’s character class, adventuring companion, the legendary weapon he is seeking, and the final villain he will face. To be able to vote, fans need to donate to access the polls.
It is a nice way to bring in money for this cause. Critical Role fans have constantly shown their generosity by donating to other causes the show has supported, such as 826 L.A. which brings creativity tools to children that otherwise wouldn’t have access. Fans also raised over $11 Million to fund an animated television series of Critical Role.
Colbert discusses many nerdy topics on his show, particularly Lord of the Rings and other works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Upon the announcement of the game, Mercer tweeted his excitement and asked for fans support for the cause and that he was happy to partner with Red Nose Day.
Super excited to be working with the wonderful folks at #RedNoseDay for this cause. Help support if you can, because… this is happening. https://t.co/v5Ieoue2nx

One-on-one adventures aren’t often seen in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, which is focused on using an adventuring party to overcome challenges. But if anyone has the personality and imagination to carry such a game, it would most definitely be Matthew Mercer and Stephen Colbert.
