Cryptobros have quite the reputation when it comes to their obnoxious personalities, regardless of whether they’re just ‘playing a character.’ Paying a woman to be a fake girlfriend wouldn’t be the most surprising for a crypto CEO, but one in Miami, Florida, did so without informing the woman of the bit. Nick O’Neill of the BoDoggos crypto company paid Karsyn Bailee $400 “to act in some skits.” However, O’Neill then posted a photo of them on his X account, claiming that she was his “new girlfriend” without her knowledge or permission.
“Mr nick o’neill (choose rich) Mislead and embarrassed me with this post. I was paid $400 to act in some skits. I had to confirm what skits I was comfortable with. I didn’t know this pic was being posted and I didn’t know the caption. He also refused to tag me after in anything,” Bailee explained on X.
Several days later, Bailee had to confirm again to her social media followers that she had never met O’Neill before their engagement, nor had she been with him since. The whole ordeal was just a few hours of recording skits, but things definitely turned up a notch when the Florida cryptobro made the claim that they were a couple. Reddit was quick to criticize O’Neill, saying that he’s an “‘Alpha male’ [who] needs to pay women to take pics with him.” Others made fun of his looks, saying that “He looks exactly like those monkey NFTs.”
Yet many Reddit commenters point out that Nick O’Neill often makes satirical content of the cryptobro stereotype. In other words, the whole “new girlfriend” bit with Bailee was indeed supposed to be fake, but she was upset since he didn’t inform her of the troll scheme. One person explains that it was all “rage bait for profit.” They continued: “People really need to stop giving these people attention.”
It does soften the blow a little knowing that O’Neill meant for this all to be a joke, poking fun at cryptobros, yet it’s still scummy that he used the woman as a paid accessory rather than explaining to her what was going on.
