Miami locals gathered to protest outside the Krome Detention Facility on Saturday. The ICE center has become a focal point for anti-immigration advocates. Reports of human rights abuses occurring there are many. Overcrowding within the approximately 600-bed facility has led to people sleeping on the floor and beside toilets. The detainees within are also reportedly only receiving a cup of water per day. Three people have already died at Krome this fiscal year. TikToks by one detainee have offered a glimpse of what ICE and Donald Trump are subjecting people to. Now, many in Miami are taking to the streets to make their objections heard.
Krome Detention Facility Crisis Continues in Miami
The Trump administration has used Immigration and Customs Enforcement not only to detain and deport immigrants but also to silence its perceived enemies. Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk are only two names on the growing list of people abducted by ICE for speaking out against the Palestinian genocide.
The signs at the Krome protest in Miami reflected that. Several featured the names and photos of people in ICE custody, accompanied by the words “Kidnapped By I.C.E.” Another sign shared a similar perspective, reading “Kamp Krome Kills.”
A TikTok by u/shhitsarevolution about the Krome protests in Miami received over 1k likes and many supportive comments. “This facility should be shut down,” said one commenter. The Trump administration is using a variety of prisons and detention centers for its xenophobic purge. This includes Krome, Guantanamo Bay, and more. Another commenter wished they lived close enough to attend the protests themselves, saying,
I’m so proud of you all for protesting outside of krome. If I lived near you, I’d be there with you. I’m up in PA. Just know I stand with you [Sic]
The Krome protests in Miami are far from the only ones. Cities and towns across the U.S. have been speaking up against Donald Trump and ICE. The high-profile abductions of Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk have also turned colleges into even more of a powder keg than they already were. As the U.S. government doubles down on its detainment and deportation efforts, facilities like Krome are only getting more full.
