Michelle Obama is ready to address concerned fans and put the rumors of her divorce from Barack Obama to rest for good. The 60-year-old stirred the rumor mills earlier this year after failing to attend several major events alongside her husband, including Donald Trump’s inauguration and Jimmy Carter’s funeral. She caught the flak especially for failing to attend both events, leading many to suggest her move was an act of defiance towards two politicians she despised. However, conspiracy theorists saw things beyond the political perspectives, suggesting her absence from her husband’s side meant trouble in paradise.
These theories soon took a life of their own, with netizens piecing together possible pointers that suggest Michelle and Barack Obama are indeed getting divorced. Eagle-eyed observers cited things like their reduced joint pubic appearances, date nights, and even coupling up on social media. While the couple mostly let the divorce rumors run wild, they squashed them on occasion with a few date nights and subtle comments suggesting their desire to sustain their marriage for the long haul.
Is Michelle Obama Divorcing Barack?
After months of enduring the divorce rumors, Michelle Obama finally addressed them, revealing whether or not she and Barack Obama are getting divorced. During a sit-down with NPR‘s Rachel Martin, published on Thursday, the mom of two debunked the rumors of marital woes, clarifying that they had no divorce on the plate. Michelle also explained the reason for the lack of constant romantic outings and social media posts of them together, attributing it to their progressing age. She divulged,
“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage. It’s like, “OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives. We are 60. We’re 60, y’all. You just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day.
During the interview, Michelle discussed the reason behind her absence from major events this year, which sparked the divorce rumors in the first place. According to her, one of her resolutions this year was to not attend events and occasions people naturally expected her to. Hence, she decided to sit out the inauguration and Jimmy Carter’s funeral. The Becoming author believes adhering to that decision offered her a chance to own her choices. She divulged,
“That was a part of me using my ambition to say, ‘Let me define what I want to do, apart from what I’m supposed to do, what the world expects of me.’ And I have to own that. Those are my choices. Whatever the backlash was, I had to sit in it and own it.”
Michelle Reveals Future Regrets After Skipping Trump Inauguration
The two stressed that despite the scrutiny she received so far as a result of her decision, she had no regrets now, but that stance could change along the line. Michelle Obama has previously addressed her choice to skip Donald Trump’s inauguration this year, attributing it to her dislike for politics, which she considered her husband’s thing. She revealed that while the decision was indeed a tough one to make and stick to, she knew it was the right thing for her to do. The former first lady also admitted that the year had been a tough one, especially while navigating the loss of her mom alongside everything else. Yet, the prevailing divorce rumors made it even more difficult to cope with the struggles.
Addressing these struggles during a sit-down with Sophia Bush in April, Michelle attempted to refute the divorce rumors, writing them off as part of the things women deal with when they dare to become independent of societal norms and expectations. In her case, the world kept hitting her with divorce rumors, but most women have been forced to deal with even more horrible stereotypes, often justified under vindicative labels.
