Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Says LGBTQ+ Americans Are ‘a Target,’ Prompting Pushback: ‘Nobody Is Targeting Them’

Still arguing

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer posted from the Human Rights Campaign dinner that LGBTQ+ Americans are “a target,” then drew a split online over whether that warning holds. Some thanked her. Others asked a blunt question.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer posted on X that LGBTQ+ Americans are “a target right now” and said she is standing with the Human Rights Campaign to “fight back against hate” and protect the right to live as one’s “authentic self.” The Sunday post included photos from her appearance with the group. It quickly drew replies questioning whether the community is being targeted, along with criticism of her record on related issues.

The images show Whitmer at an HRC podium in a packed ballroom, making a heart gesture at the microphone and later posing with attendees against the group’s backdrop. There is no speech video attached to the post.

In the caption, she wrote, “It’s no secret that LGBTQ+ Americans are a target right now,” and added that she is “standing with Human Rights Campaign to fight back against hate and protect your right to live as your authentic self.”

Hours before the dinner, she told The Advocate she has not changed course. “Michigan is a very swing state, and I’ve never wavered on these issues, and politically, I’ve been successful,” she said. “This is about fundamental freedoms. This is about dignity for people, no matter who you love or how you identify.”

HRC President Kelley Robinson separately called her an example of “the kind of allyship our community needs in this moment,” pointing to Michigan’s expansion of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. The X post itself does not show the full keynote or what was said onstage.

Online Split Over Whitmer’s Warning to LGBTQ+ Americans

Some users praised the stance. One wrote that “the way her allyship has never wavered has actually had a hugely important impact on my life,” and another simply said, “Thank you Gov.” That tracks with the same-day Advocate interview and HRC’s public welcome of her as keynote speaker.

A larger share of replies challenged the “target” line. “How are they a target?” one user asked. Others wrote, “Nobody is targeting them, stop making issues where there isn’t any,” and “The secret is they’re not actually being targeted.”

Several argued the fight is over children’s medical care and women’s sports, not adult private life: “Nobody is attacking any adult or trying to take away their right to live as whatever it is they want,” one commenter said, adding that many Americans “do not want… men in women’s sports, no matter how they identify.”

The dinner and Whitmer’s post now sit inside a wider midterm argument over LGBTQ+ rights and how Democrats talk about them. Online, the split remains over whether her “target” warning describes a real threat or a political frame.
