Picture this: You live in an apartment where you’re happily making a life for yourself. You like the area around you, where you’ve received a job you love and have things to do daily. But there’s only one problem… You have disrespectful neighbors. Instead of keeping to themselves, you have to hear everything they do daily because they’re right above your head for most of the day. This is what one woman in Michigan is facing, and she’s fed up with it. So, to take action, she decided to confront her noisy neighbors.
Cat (@catmking) lives in a downstairs apartment unit and is extremely annoyed with her noisy neighbors. Her neighbors have children, and they live in the unit above her. As Cat explains, their children are always jumping around and making a ton of noise, and now it’s interfering with her daily life. She has to hear it constantly and sleep with a pillow over her head because it even disrupts her sleep. As she says, “I’m going insane here” and “I can’t take anymore.”
Cat decides to confront her neighbors about the noise issues. She said the running, jumping, and crying all day and night have gotten so bad that they affect every aspect of her life. As she puts it, “I understand that they’re kids, but you know what? You need to tell your kids to be quiet sometimes, especially when you live in an apartment above people.” Cat has spoken with others in the complex, and they said they also have issues hearing their upstairs neighbors clearly all the time. It’s obviously an issue with apartment buildings as a whole, and it’s probably due to the use of cheap products. On top of that, there’s no such thing as soundproofing to perfection in an apartment complex. But that’s where people need to start having some consideration for others.
Cat records herself nervously walking up the stairs so she can confront her neighbors and keep the receipts. As she knocks on her neighbor’s door, you can hear the kids screaming and going all-out wild from inside. I’m almost certain their next-door neighbors on either side of them aren’t super appreciative of all the noise, either. Eventually, one of the children opens the door, and a man approaches to greet her. The man apologizes for the children being noisy and says, “I’m sorry; we yell at them all the time.” Cat says, “I know they’re kids” and sounds super sympathetic, even though she’s dealt with so much from having to hear it all the time. She handles it incredibly well.
By the end of the video, the kids are back to slamming doors and jumping around. It’s clear that Cat is at her wits’ end and isn’t sure about where she can turn. Commenters are divided, with some siding with Cat and others telling her it’s an issue she can’t control. One commenter stated, “It’s apartment living. Nothing to do but buy a townhouse or a house. Kids do kid things. YOU could move to an upper apartment.” One commenter suggested, “Why should she have to make all the concessions? Having kids doesn’t override consideration.”
Cat has since made an update video, replying to the commenters telling her to “move” if she isn’t happy with her apartment. She speaks about how she’s lived in an apartment her entire life, even as a child herself. She says that she’s always lived respectfully and expects the same from others. That isn’t too much to ask for, right?
