In a move that no one saw coming, the Minecraft brand is branching out to top-down action RPGs. Minecraft Dungeons is like Diablo, except blocky. Despite this rather strange combination, the game has been getting a fair amount of attention. People wondered whether the game would live up to the quality of Minecraft itself or be able to hold its own against other games in the dungeon-crawler genre.

The answer is…kinda?

People compliment the aesthetic and soundtrack of the game. Both exude the Minecraft tone and spirit, which is absolutely essential. The combat is also something being praised. Minecraft Dungeons doesn’t have traditional classes or stats; all progress and specializations are dictated by your weapons and armor. This is a unique take that allows for experimentation, even if it is slightly limited. Of course, playing with friends makes the experience even more fun.

Some critics, though, say the game can drag in the middle and be too much of a grind, despite its short length. This could be attributed to the fact that Minecraft Dungeons doesn’t seem to do much in terms of innovation. As well, there is no crafting or mining in the game, which is kinda weird.

But I’ll let the reviews speak for themselves!

  • Destructoid – 8/10
  • Press Start – 7.5/10
  • IGN – 7/10
  • Game Informer – 7/10
  • Gamespot – 7/10
  • PC Games N – 7/10
  • Games Radar – 3.5/5
  • USGamer – 3.5/5
  • Stevivor – 6.5/10
  • VG247 – 3/5
  • VGC – 3/5
  • Eurogamer – “…while Minecraft Dungeons might sound an unlikely concept – a more accessible Diablo with Creepers – it ends up feeling a natural extension of the formula.”
  • Kotaku – “…for now, it’s enough that Minecraft Dungeons is a chill, fun romp through a bunch of pretty video game levels.”

And those are all the reviews! The results are somewhat mixed, but there seems to be a consensus that if you enjoy the dungeon-crawler RPG genre, you’ll probably like Minecraft Dungeons as well.

Are you going to pick Minecraft Dungeons up? Fan of the original Minecraft? What about Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode? Let us know in the comments below!
