For the past few months, fans of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate have been wondering who the next character to join the fray on is. With so much speculation over which property a new third party character would represent, they have finally delivered to bring an entirely original character to Smash. The playable character, Steve from Minecraft, is coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate later this year. With much speculation on whether Microsoft would have more representation since including Banjo-Kazooie, the possibility was inevitable. Part of the second challenger pack, he is the second character to be revealed with still 4 characters left unknown. While the presentation held today was only a teaser with more to come later in October, the new character will build and break his way through originality for a creative Smash Bros experience.
They showed the new character off with a great introduction to the world of Minecraft, making many references to the confinements of the blocky graphics and effects from TNT and even Redstone pistons. The trailer also shows a fantastic glimpse at some of his moves. Borrowing from the original game, Steve can use lava buckets, swords and can even use his pickaxe to mine for items. These tools are part of his overall gimmick to become stronger, which usually involves his down-B special move to cycle through gathering materials. This effect could have an interesting role in the usage of Steve’s kit and play-style.
Amongst some gameplay were also the various alternate costumes he has available, which include the counterpart character, Alex. Even the Zombie and Enderman are becoming alternate outfits for Steve. With little information to go off of, Masahiro Sakurai discussed the coming release of the character by announcing another morning presentation to take place on October 3rd at 7 PST and 10 EST. With hopefully a release date in tow, fans will have to wait to get a better glimpse at the upcoming blocky warrior and his spirits to join Super Smash Brothers Ultimate later this year.
