Has your city ever made a decision that you weren’t happy with? What if that decision directly impacted you? When a city makes a decision without your consent involving your own home, it’s likely that you’ll be feeling furious about it. This is what happened to a woman in Minnesota when her city decided it was going to take some of the road leading up to her home. The reason? To make way for a massive development. Now, with no options left, she wonders what this will mean for the future of her home.
Dawn Cooper (@coopaloop1977) shared a video on TikTok of what recently happened to her home in Maple Grove, Minnesota. She said, “Gotta love when the city cares more about massive developments than tax paying homeowners!” In the video, Dawn explains that she owns a home that has been in her family for 60 years. However, she says that despite the fact that she pays taxes, the city has “taken the whole street” in front of her house. This happened completely without her consent.
Dawn pans the video to her street and you can see a “road closed” sign and the road abruptly ends, leading to ground. She shows where her house is located and the fact that there is less street and a new development on the other side of her. She says, “This is now our driveway. It is 1,000 feet long. I have no idea if they’re going to come get my garbage.” She’s also concerned that she might not get her mail anymore. This is due to the fact that she’s now landlocked. Because of the new development, her small stretch of street is now “owned by the city.” She is also expected to maintain the small road on her own. As a homeowner, this would boil my blood.
To make matters worse, Dawn said that they spent thousands of their own dollars on tree removal. This is due to the fact that all the trees fell down when they started to put in the city’s new development. She added that they’re also going to be investing thousands of dollars on a lawyer. The city virtually has no answers for them. The city apparently only cares about their new development. Dawn says that they don’t seem to care about “one small homeowner.” This is, of course, despite the fact that her family lived there for so long.
Along with commenters giving her good legal advice, others had hilarious suggestions. One commenter said, “Cool, a runway… buy an airplane you now have an airport.” Another person stated honestly, “If the city owns it, it’s their responsibility to maintain. That’s madness. The city is asking for it.” Another said, “These real estate developers are so corrupt and shady.” Unfortunately, it’s the homeowners who came before who usually suffer due to a development making its new home. Hopefully, Dawn will be able to figure this out so she can live peacefully in her home.
