Minnesotans Outraged After Pastor Says ICE Let Him Go Because He’s White: “Our State Feels More Like Russia Than the USA”

Minnesota is still reeling days after Rev. Kenny Callaghan claimed he was briefly detained by ICE agents during a neighborhood raid and released with the remark, “Well, you’re white, and you wouldn’t be any fun anyway.” While the Fox 9 interview aired four days ago, the reaction from citizens online has grown intense, painting a picture of widespread fear, frustration, and outrage.

Many Minnesotans expressed disbelief that federal raids could escalate to such a personal and seemingly arbitrary encounter. One commenter said, “My home state feels more like Russia than the USA right now… They are literally invading our state.” Others questioned the role of local leadership, with criticism directed at both political and law enforcement figures for not doing enough to protect residents from ICE operations.

Reddit chatter suggests Minnesotans feel trapped between aggressive federal enforcement and perceived inaction from local authorities. Some citizens fear that such raids are no longer about enforcing law, but about instilling terror, echoing the pastor’s own conclusion that these operations are “really about fear and intimidation.”

Frustration is particularly palpable regarding the response from elected officials. Many voices online argue that statements alone are insufficient and are calling for more visible, tangible action to protect communities. Others expressed anger over what they see as selective enforcement, highlighting the racial undertones of Callaghan’s release.

A number of commenters also drew broader comparisons to global events, warning that the state risks sliding into lawless territory if accountability isn’t enforced. One user warned that the situation has escalated beyond peaceful protest: “We’re in Civil War territory… One side is scared to pull the trigger while the other is, quite literally, murdering people in the streets.”

While some Minnesotans defended local leadership, noting lawsuits and complaints filed in response to prior incidents, many still believe the federal presence is overwhelming and unconstitutional. A sense of helplessness pervades, alongside calls for community solidarity and direct action to prevent further harm.

Even after days, the story has not faded. Minnesotans online continue to debate the broader implications, the role of race in law enforcement encounters, and the adequacy of state and local leadership. The consensus among many is that the fear sparked by ICE raids lingers far beyond the moment of detention.
