There was a time when Tim Burton delivered some of the most imaginative, unsettling, and interesting worlds in Hollywood. As a director, producer, or creator, he helped bring to life the worlds of Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and Mars Attacks. His more recent works have been hit and miss, and it almost seemed that Burton may have lost his touch. His latest film, Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children, shows quite a bit of promise. It ticks all those vintage Tim Burton boxes. Charming and quirky, yes, but also dark. Dangerous. Probably even some elements of genuine horror. And the source material fits perfectly with the director’s style.
Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children is based on a series of young adult novels by Ransom Riggs. They tell the story of a strange orphanage in the Welsh countryside and the odd children that live there. Every child at Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children has a special talent or ability. One can control fire. One is invisible. Essentially a twisted take on the X-Men. Burton often toys with the idea of unsettling children and putting those children in danger, so it seems a good fit.
Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children also features some all-star casting. Eva Green, Samuel L. Jackson, Ella Purnell, and even Dame Judi Dench are a part of the cast. Even more interesting, neither Helena Bonham Carter nor Johnny Depp, both Tim Burton mainstays, make an appearance. Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children releases on September 30, 2016.
