Missouri Thrift Store Called Out for Allegedly Sky-High Prices: ‘Who Is Spending $1,200 at a Thrift Store?’

Something sketchy could be going on here

Usually, customers at thrift stores are there to get a good deal on used goods, though one shop in Missouri seemingly had other prices in mind. In a post on r/mildlyinfuriating, Future-Shallot6377 shared photos of a local thrift store selling a painting for quite the asking price: $1,200, to be exact. Such prices might be something one would see at an art studio, but not a thrift store. Needless to say, thousands of Redditors were appalled at the sight.

“Who is spending $1200 on a painting at a thrift store? They would be better auctioning it off” exclaimed a commenter. Another person pointed out how the painting isn’t the authentic version, but a printed reproduction. “I like it a lot, but it ain’t worth 20% of that asking price, including the frame,” remarked a third.

Redditors Made Several Guesses About the Missouri Thift Store’s Expensive Painting

As to why the thrift store would allegedly sell something in the thousands, people have a few theories. “The owner that needs to launder drug money,” suggested a user. Another person believed the shop actually didn’t want to sell the painting. Instead, it’s a decoration piece of sorts to make the property look better, more luxurious, if you will.

One Redditor believed that the revenue from selling such an expensive painting could be going towards a charity or assistance program, like a food bank. Still, Future Shallot felt as though $1,200 is too high for something at a thrift store. “There’s gotta be a line somewhere,” they wrote.

Some people went as far as looking up the painting online to see how much it sold for, with many alleging it ranged between $200 and $800, but nowhere near this Missouri thrift store’s asking price. “Exactly what I saw reverse google searching, nothing over a grand, so I’m just baffled,” chimed in Future Shallot. Though one person claims they found a non-used, brand-new print of the same picture priced in the thousands.

In the end, why a thrift store would be selling this particular painting for such a high price remains a mystery, as OP wasn’t able to elaborate on any details. That said, a second-hand shop is still the last place many would expect to spend over a thousand dollars.
