Miyazaki’s Attachment to Bloodborne May Explain Lack of Sequel or Remake, According to Ex-PlayStation Boss

Fans dreaming of a Bloodborne sequel or remake might finally know why it hasn’t happened. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently spilled his ‘theory’ on the situation. Despite its critical acclaim and many gamers championing it to this day, there’s a personal reason why it still stays a PS4 exclusive. FromSoftware‘s boss and Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki seems to have a deep connection to his craft and won’t let anyone else touch it.

“Bloodborne is one of the most popular [requests] on my Twitter/X,” said Yoshida. “People wonder why we haven’t really done anything like, even, like update, or remaster. Should be easy, right?” However, the hesitation might stem more from sentiment than technical challenges.

“[Hidetaka] Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, what he created,” Yoshida explained in Kinda Funny Gamescast, when Greg Miller asked about a Bloodborne sequel or remaster. “So I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and so busy he cannot do it himself. And he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it.”

He explained that the PlayStation team tries to ‘respect’ Miyazaki’s wishes, despite having full control of the Bloodborne intellectual property. Still, Yoshida clarified that this was only his ‘personal theory’ and not based on insider knowledge.

“I left the [Sony Interactive Entertainment] first party [team] so I don’t know what’s going on,” Yoshida added. He was President of SIE Worldwide Studios from 2008 to 2019, four years after Bloodborne‘s debut. Succeeded by Hermen Hultz, Yoshida later fully retired from SIE in early 2025.

Still, fans shouldn’t lose hope, as PlayStation is always open to revisiting its IPs for future projects. “Never say never, right? Who knows,” Yoshida said when he was asked about a rerelease of Gravity Rush. Pointing to recent revivals like Freedom Wars Remastered and Fantavision VR, he believes PlayStation is open to lending IPs to original creators. This includes those who no longer work at the company and have gone independent.

For more details on the interview, check out the Kinda Funny Gamescast episode above starting at the 56:30 mark. It’s no sequel or remake but for now, players can replay Bloodborne at native 1080p with much faster load times on a PS5. Owners of beefy enough PC rigs can now experience Yharnam with an emulator as well.
