With Deadpool 3 getting closer by the day, there’s a lot of talk out there about who, out of Deadpool’s motley band of irreverent friends and loved ones, will return for the next installment in the franchise. The most pressing of these questions surround Morena Baccarin, who starred in Deadpool 1 and 2 as Vanessa, the main love interest of Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool. When asked about whether or not she’ll make her return for Deadpool 3, Baccarin had some interesting things to say on the subject, but it all boils down to one word: maybe.
Morena Baccarin made her first appearance as Vanessa in Deadpool (2016), where she debuted the character as a prostitute Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) meets while working as a freelance mercenary. A year later, the two are romantically involved and become engaged, only for Wilson to leave Vanessa after he’s diagnosed with cancer and hopes to spare her the pain of watching him die. He later undergoes an experimental treatment and develops his trademark regenerative ability, taking on the name Deadpool and largely avoiding Vanessa until she’s kidnapped by Ajax (Ed Skrein), and Wade Wilson is forced to reveal his identity in the process of saving her, leading to the couple reuniting.
Deadpool 2 would have Morena Baccarin return as Vanessa, only to be killed by a mercenary who’s come for Deadpool at the beginning of the movie. From there, her presence is largely limited to the driving force behind Deadpool and co. as they hunt down the people responsible for her death – that is, until a mid-credits scene, wherein Deadpool travels back in time to prevent Vanessa’s death and opens the door for her return in Deadpool 3. Though her death in Deadpool 2 has attracted a lot of criticism for being an example of “fridging” – where a female character is killed to motivate the hero of the story, usually a male relative – Baccarin has stated that she has been approached about returning for Deadpool 3.
Morena Baccarin ‘Doesn’t Know’ if Vanessa Will Return
When asked about the potential for her return in a recent episode of Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Baccarin said the following, according to Deadline:
“I have to be very diplomatic about what I say here. I’d like to be in it. They have called me about being in it. Right now, we have not agreed on terms, and everybody’s trying their best, and doing their best. But it may or may not work out. I don’t know.”
Later in the same interview, Baccarin admitted that while she’d like to believe that Vanessa is an “integral part” of the Deadpool movies, she thinks that since Marvel and Disney bought out the Deadpool universe, Deadpool 3 is going to be “reinvented a little bit” to focus more on the dynamic between Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. While this is, admittedly, something fans have been waiting for since Deadpool made a throwaway reference to Wolverine during the opening of the original Deadpool, it might also be interesting to see how Morena Baccarin could play Vanessa’s life after death.
Morena Baccarin hasn’t given any official word as to whether or not she’ll return for Deadpool 3, and it seems like things are largely up in the air at the moment. More information on the cast and plot of Deadpool 3 will likely become available as it continues development, but for now, what do you think?
