With the fighting game genre having so many new installments, NetherRealm Studios is certainly sitting amongst the best. Releasing Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, the title has received lots of support and DLC over the years with plenty of new roster additions. Featuring some crossover with DC, NetherRealm might be pursuing the Mortal Kombat Franchise further. Despite usually staggering game releases between NetherRealm’s Injustice series, Mortal Kombat 12 might be coming sooner rather than later. With the sale of Warner Brothers gaming division still inconclusive, making an Injustice sequel during that time frame might be extremely difficult. In a recently published Giant Bomb video, insider Jeff Grubb discussed the possibilities of Mortal Kombat 12 being the next NetherRealm Studios game.
What does Mortal Kombat 12 mean for NetherRealm Studios?
Speculation over what Warner Brothers Games studios would be sold initially didn’t include NetherRealm. With the 40 billion dollar deal set to close within a year’s time, much speculation over various studios has ensued. While it has been confirmed that the gaming division will split, no details have presented themselves on where specific studios will end up or when the transition will occur. With Warner Brothers stepping away from NetherRealm, licensing becomes an issue.
It would also make guest appearances in Mortal Kombat, like Joker, much more difficult. Mortal Kombat 12 would be much easier to develop, especially with how well MK11 sold. There would also be no hassle in getting licenses for characters. Despite this, there’s still a possibility that NetherRealm Studios is accounting for this licensing issue and is working with their DC partners to make a new Injustice title happen no matter what.
