For some of you Mortal Kombat had its moment in the spotlight and has now faded away. Quite the contrary. Mortal Kombat X is still the second most played and streamed the game on twitch with a very consistent player base. NetherRealm Studios announced on twitter that they are releasing a free skin pack for players to download on March 1st. The skins are all medieval-themed and feature classic garbs such as executioner masks, archer cloaks, and dragons themed apparel. It is surprising that with so many purchasable DLC options and microtransactions within games to see a game developer release free content to its players.
The charters receiving skins in the medieval skin pack are Kotal Kahn, Ferra & Torr, and Kung Jin.
The reason this could possibly be is to retain current players and possibly gain new ones through the highly acclaimed release of Street Fighter V. With Street Fighter releasing this week, Mortal Kombat X can expect a large amount of fighter game enthusiasts to switch to the dark side and enjoy a newer title. Considering this, the free pack doesn’t seem as nice as it is a strategic marketing ploy. Regardless, free content is free content, and that is something so rarely seen today from the high revenue gaming industry fat-cats. So when March 1st rolls around, put away your wallet and make your way to the Playstation and Xbox marketplace for some free DLC. Around this same time, be sure to keep an eye out for other Mortal Kombat X content to go on sale.
