Disney isn’t done digging up its 90’s animated properties yet. Mulan is next in line for the live-action treatment in the first teaser trailer.

This remake is going to have some differences as it steers away from being a musical to a martial arts war film. For example, staple characters from the original like Li Shang and Eddie Murphy’s Mushu dragon have reportedly been removed.

Liu Yifei plays the titular character Mulan, while Donnie Yen (IP Man) is her mentor Commander Tung. Then, there is Jet Li in the role of China’s emperor.

According to cast member Li Gong, Mulan is going to have the biggest budget of any Disney movie to date. This is said to be aiming for a grand and epic scope for the story. Going off this new trailer, it looks like that budget comment might be true.

Mulan is due out on March 27th, 2020 featuring a heavy cast of Asian actors to portray the characters. This comes after their most recent release, Aladdin, received backlash over the cast members being “whitewashed”.  However, the controversy didn’t prevent it from bagging $900 million at the box office so far.

Mulan: Let’s Take It From the Start

Mulan from the orignal taking to her love interest

Before Snapchat had everyone fooling each other with gender changing filters, Mulan was doing it in ancient China by just tying her hair up.

The 1998 counterpart is about a girl who disguises herself as a man and joins the army fearing that her ailing father will get drafted. It later received a direct-to-video sequel in 2004 that went directly to the closets of many across the world.

Although the original did make a profit, it didn’t set fire to any box office like Lion King. This lead into the tail-end of 2-D animated Disney films. Recently, its most prominent part in pop culture has been due to Szechuan Sauce that Rick and Morty fans were rabid to get.

The Mulan remake is reportedly getting the budget of what the ’98 version grossed its entire run. Let’s see if this $300 million pays off next spring.

What is the best Disney animated film? Should they keep doing these live-action remakes?  Leave your comments!
