Nick Wehry is currently in the middle of a huge scandal. The competitive eater, who finished fourth in this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, is being accused of cheating during the competition. Although Wehry has since denied the allegations, a new video has surfaced, appearing to show him tampering with another contestant’s plates. While things certainly don’t look good for him, Wehry insists he’s innocent.
Nick Wehry Accused of Cheating During Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest
In a new statement to The Washington Post, Nick Wehry admitted he “did touch another eater’s plates.” While that doesn’t mean he cheated, the star is willing to get a new score due to the scandal. “Because this gives the appearance or possibility of impropriety I have asked Major League Eating to adjust my score down,” he said.
During the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, Wehry appeared to chow down 46.75 hot dogs during the competition. However, when Major League Eating (MLE) posted the results online, his score was changed to 51.75. The figures were determined by the number of empty plates left behind by each constant, with one plate meaning five hot dogs were consumed.
According to the New York Post, several sources saw Nick Wehry allegedly tampering with the plates to boost his score. “100% he cheated,” one of the insiders said. While Wehry would have finished fourth regardless if he ate 46.75 or 51.75 hot dogs, the latter would give him a higher social standing. Since few people ever go above 50, Wehry would be part of a “very small elite club of competitive eaters.”
After being accused of cheating, Wehry released a statement denying he used foul play to get fourth place. “I would never want to take a placing or number I didn’t earn,” he said. “I would never cheat at a contest, regardless of why. People that know me know that.”
MLE revealed it launched an investigation into the cheating accusations against Nick Wehry. While they didn’t say he was guilty, the organization has appeared to comply with his request to adjust his score. According to the MLE website, Wehry’s score in the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has been changed to 46.75.
