Nelly’s music era, which flourished in the early 2000s, is a pivotal chapter in the history of Hip Hop. At the time, the genre, which had its roots in the South Bronx in the 1970s, had evolved into a global cultural phenomenon. During Nelly’s era, Hip Hop saw an unprecedented fusion of styles, with artists experimenting with diverse sounds and influences. Over two decades after the rapper rose to prominence, he finally expressed his feelings about the level of competition during the height of his career. In a recent chat, Nelly described his era as the toughest music era.
Nelly Says His Music Era Was the Most Challenging and Competitive
Nelly has claimed the Hip Hop era in which he emerged remains the toughest music era. The St. Louis rap legend made the revelation during a recent appearance on The Shop. In the chat, Nelly reflected on his breakthrough success in the 2000s and his challenges in trying to stand out in a crowded marketplace full of stars. Recall that the icon came onto the scene in 2000 with his debut album Country Grammar. The album eventually spawned three top 20 Billboard Hot 100 singles, making him have a strong argument for best new artist.
However, as the 49-year-old Nelly revealed on The Shop, he wasn’t nominated in that category at the Grammys in 2001.
“Country Grammar sold five million and I didn’t even get nominated as Best New Artist! Because my album came out in 2000 so I wasn’t even on the ballot,” he said.
Nelly then declared his era was the most challenging to succeed in.
“You gotta understand, my era of music was the toughest era in Hip Hop ever,” he said.
Nelly said this was because he was up against icons like DMX, Jay Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, and Ludacris.
Fans After With Nelly’s Revelation
The Shade Room reposted Nelly’s interview on Instagram. In no time, fans filled up the comments section with their thoughts. Many couldn’t agree more with Nelly, noting that indeed, his era was the toughest music era.
“Facts. Let’s not forget Ja Rule was also heavy in that era,” a fan wrote.
Another music lover commented:
“He’s not lying at all! There were so many heavy hitters in their prime in the early 2000s, it was ridiculous.”
A third follower also shared:
“He not capping. That era was the golden years for Hip Hop.”
Another fan declared:
“He’s absolutely correct, that’s why people like us from that era of music continue to listen to that same music today.”
Others noted that even though Nelly was up against some of the biggest names in the industry, he was an icon in his own right. It is hard to argue with Nelly’s assertions given how great Hip Hop acts in his era were. However, in the ever-improving music industry, one can count against tougher eras emerging.
