Nelly Says His Music Era Was the Most Challenging and Competitive
Nelly has claimed the Hip Hop era in which he emerged remains the toughest music era. The St. Louis rap legend made the revelation during a recent appearance on The Shop. In the chat, Nelly reflected on his breakthrough success in the 2000s and his challenges in trying to stand out in a crowded marketplace full of stars. Recall that the icon came onto the scene in 2000 with his debut album Country Grammar. The album eventually spawned three top 20 Billboard Hot 100 singles, making him have a strong argument for best new artist.ย
However, as the 49-year-old Nelly revealed on The Shop, he wasn’t nominated in that category at the Grammys in 2001.ย
“Country Grammar sold five million and I didn’t even get nominated as Best New Artist! Because my album came out in 2000 so I wasn’t even on the ballot,” he said.
Nelly then declared his era was the most challenging to succeed in.
“You gotta understand, my era of music was the toughest era in Hip Hop ever,” he said.
Nelly said this was because he was up against icons like DMX, Jay Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, and Ludacris.
