Netflix has announced that it will no longer stream on Airplay. Airplay, for those that don’t know or use it, is a media sharing feature provided by Apple. The feature allows you to stream videos, music, movies, photos, etc. Airplay is about to extend all services to other devices and with this news, Netflix had to pull the plug.
Netflix claims that by removing support for Airplay they do not damage their level of quality for their customers. The third-party devices may or may not be able to stream Netflix well. So in order to prevent any issues, Netflix has discontinued Apple Airplay. However, you are still able to stream on Apple TV and any device that can have the Netflix app.
Both companies reassure that it is not due to any contract breaks. Funny though, Apple will be launching its own streaming service that is due to come out this fall 2019. With Apple ready to be a top competitor, it is no surprise for the pull by Netflix.
But before the new Apple TV + streaming service, Apple gives its users a channel experience. This will be accessible through Airplay. The ability to access everything you can think of with channels from Starz, HBO, Epix, CBS All Access, but not Netflix.
CEO Reed Hastings explained why they will not be moving forward with Apple. “Apple is a great company,” Hastings said. However, Netflix wanted to control its experience within its own app, which is why it wasn’t working with Apple. “We have chosen not to integrate into their services.”
A shame really, with Netflix taking huge strides and being one of the most successful streaming services the two companies could have done well. Sharing the spotlight or control just isn’t in the cards currently. Airplay will still continue to grow and Apple assures users that its far from finishing its reveal on streaming.
