Live-action takes on beloved anime series are still hit-or-miss. Netflix is not stopping, regardless of results, as it has given the first look at the Fire Nation in its live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender (seen below). The look at the live-action version of this story shows Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao, and Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula.
The Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender Remake Unleashes Fiery Images of the Fire Nation
The first look delivered by Netflix has given enough of a taste of how it will handle the source material. The Nickelodeon series went from 2005 to 2008. It was beloved for its standout animation, which was a hybrid of Western animation and various Eastern and Asian cultures for its visual aesthetic. The M. Night Shyamalan movie was universally poorly received by fans and critics. Coming off the successes of One Piece, Netflix has to get over a low bar and maintain its momentum.
Beyond seeing the Fire Nation for the Netflix interpretation of Avatar, we have seen other leading characters, like Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko. The live-action remake stars Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Maria Zhang as Suki, Tamlyn Tomita as Yukari, Yvonne Chapman as Avatar Kyoshi, and Casey Camp-Horinek as Gran Gran.
The show has had some trouble during its production. While navigating COVID, the creators of the adaptation, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of the original series, had left the project due to “creative differences.” Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow) came in to serve as the showrunner.
Netflix will set its war against the Fire Nation in its Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2024. The eight-episode first season has no specific date as of writing.
