Earlier this week, Netflix announced its newest anime related content. Netflix released a teaser trailer for its live-action remake of the popular manga and anime, Death Note. While fans remain divided about the teaser itself, everyone is agreeance that the end of the trailer brings a welcome surprise: Willem Dafoe as the Ryuk the Shinigami.
Tsugumi Ohba’s manga focuses on a high school student, Light Yagami, that finds a magical notebook that kills whoever’s name is written in it, however, the writer chooses. Along with the book, Light is followed by a Shinigami named Ryuk who dropped the book into the human world for his own entertainment. Light (a.k.a Kira) then takes it upon himself to bring a sense of vigilante justice by filling the notebook with the names of criminals and villains. His killing spree quickly grabs the attention of Interpol and a quirky, young detective named L who will stop at nothing to catch the famed killer, “Kira”.
Netflix’s teaser trailer isn’t very long, but it provides enough information for die-hard fans to have some pretty strong opinions. The teaser showcases the well-known red apple, the Death Note falling from the sky, and just a few of the deaths Light dreams up for his victims. Apparently, this live-action Death Note looks like it will be taking place in Seattle. When it comes to Death Note, there are two characters that really stand out: Ryuk and L. Up until the end, the trailer fails to show either character. And while they still remain wholly unseen, we do hear the beautiful voice of Willem Dafoe coming from the direction of two glowing, red eyes. Also, Netflix released a photo from the set earlier today featuring L and Light.
Death Note is set to release on Netflix this summer on August 25, 2017.
